Speakman Contractors was recruited by one of its clients, to support DIY SOS: The Big Build for Children in Need 2011 by providing electricians to help renovate a dilapidated youth centre in Norris Green, one of the most deprived parts of Liverpool.

The DIY SOS team, filmed by the BBC, was joined by hundreds of trades and volunteers for the 10-day project which would normally take around six months to complete and cost around £1m.

Norris Green Youth Centre is in an area of high unemployment, high crime and gang violence.  HE Simm provided electricians from Speakman Contractors, to install an entirely new electrical system including a total re-wire.  The electricians, Duncan Aspden, Richard Del Strother, Michael Ainscough, Bradley Farran and Joseph Nutter won plenty of praise for their hard work, not least from Chris Speakman, joint managing director of Speakman Contractors.  “I cannot praise the Speakman electrical team highly enough, I am very proud of their individual contributions and of the whole project team.”

DIY SOS project manager Mark Millar said: “What has been achieved here is absolutely phenomenal.  All of the trades have worked incredibly hard and the end result speaks for itself.  Everyone should feel very proud of the part they played.  We couldn’t have done it without them.
